Decide what to do with duplicated docstrings

There's a lot of repetition in docstring (as in this example). I wonder if there is a way to define the text for a parameter somewhere and then just include it when needed.

Since #493 all functions have docstrings, there is some duplication but it is not extensive. I think the above options might add more boilerplate than it is worth. I will close this for now because the current solution is acceptable.
