We choose logistic regression partly because it’s well-understood, relatively interpretable (coefficients represent log-odds impacts), and often performs strongly for insurance-related risk predictions, provided the linearity assumptions aren’t too severely violated. If we believe certain transformations would help—like a log of annual mileage or polynomial terms for age—we’d include them as needed. Normalizing the feature when regularization is involved is recommended. Another reason for logistic regression in an insurance context is regulatory scrutiny. Insurance pricing or claim models often need a level of transparency that GLMs can provide.

In an insurance context, we often deal with a mix of numeric and categorical variables, missing values, imbalanced classes, and potential outliers—gradient boosting is fairly robust to these issues and yields higher accuracy. It might not be as interpretable as a GLM, but feature importance, SHAP values, and partial dependence plots can still give us some insights.
