# NFDI4Objects Conservation Data Framework Online Portal

This online portal serves as a reference resource for the conceptual models contained within the Conservation Data Framework (CDF). The Conservation Data Framework is a community-driven, open reference framework for the standardised, semantically interoperable collection and curation of conservation data.
It comprises:
- the jointly developed, curated [**Metadata Schema for the Documentation of Conservation and Restoration Interventions (KuR-MDS for short)**](https://nfdi4objects.github.io/n4o_conservation_data_framework/conservation_metadataschema/)
- the associated [**Conservation/Restoration Metadata Thesaurus**](https://www.w3id.org/conservation/terms/metadata)
- an [**application ontology for conservation-restoration processes (KuR Ontology for short)**](https://nfdi4objects.github.io/n4o_conservation_data_framework/conservation_ontology/)

The CDF online portal serves, in addition to formal publications, as an agile reference environment and reference work for the currently published versions of the three concepts.

## Background & Objectives
The documentation of conservation interventions is essential for the long-term preservation and scholarly cataloguing of cultural heritage. At the same time, there has so far been a lack of broadly agreed, machine-readable documentation standards. Within [NFDI4Objects](https://www.nfdi4objects.net/), this gap was addressed within the framework of [Task Area 4 ‘Protecting’](https://www.nfdi4objects.net/portal/tas/ta4/) through the design of the Conservation Data Framework. The framework provides users with a basis for the semantic modelling of conservation documentation, from practical recording to interoperable further processing in research, collection and long-term archiving contexts.
As an open, versioned and community-maintained framework, CDF lowers the barrier to entry for standards-compliant documentation and supports specialists in making their data usable, interoperable and citable in the long term.

**The aim is:**

- to enable cross-institutional comparability of data,
- to support long-term archiving,
- to promote interdisciplinary interoperability and connectivity of conservation data,
- to support open scientific practices

## Arbeitsprozess
Workflow
The framework is being developed transparently and collaboratively within the [Temporary Working Group (TWG) Community Standards for Controlled Vocabularies and Exchange Formats in the Field of Cultural Heritage Preservation and Conservation](https://www.nfdi4objects.net/portal/twgs/community-standards-f%C3%BCr-kontrollierte-vokabulare-und -exchange-formats-in-the-field-of-cultural-heritage-preservation-and-conservation/) in continuous dialogue with the wider community, e.g. within the [Community Cluster (CC) Conservation Science](https://www.nfdi4objects.net/portal/ccs/cc14_conservation_sciences/) and at events.

Feedback, comments, suggestions for changes, questions or membership enquiries regarding active participation in the TWG are always welcome and can be sent by email to [n4o_conservation_data_framework@listserv.dfn.de](n4o_conservation_data_framework@listserv.dfn.de).
