Hello OpenBeken community,
I’m looking for early technical advice before making a public device-specific request.
A Korean IoT manufacturer is discontinuing cloud/app service for one of its smart plug products. I contacted the company and suggested a “Legacy / Developer Edition” approach so that the hardware may continue to be used locally instead of becoming e-waste.
The company replied that they are internally reviewing whether they can provide technical information that would help the developer community use the device without the original cloud/app service.
At this stage, I cannot publicly share the company name, product name, internal email, or technical documents because the manufacturer has not yet approved public disclosure.
What I would like to ask the OpenBeken community is:
- If a manufacturer can provide limited technical information, what would be most useful for OpenBeken support?
- Would the following be enough to evaluate feasibility?
- Wi-Fi MCU/module name
- UART TX/RX/GND location
- GPIO mapping for relay/button/LED/power metering
- flash size
- power metering chip model, if any
- firmware backup or OTA image, if legally shareable
- If the device turns out to use BK7231T/N, BL2028N, W600/W601, XR809, RTL8710, or another OpenBeken-supported platform, what would be the recommended first steps?
- Is there a preferred template or documentation format for submitting a new smart plug profile?
The goal is not to pressure the manufacturer or bypass anything unlawfully. The goal is to prepare a responsible path for preserving otherwise functional IoT hardware, ideally with the manufacturer’s cooperation.
If this moves forward and the manufacturer allows public disclosure, I will share the exact model, photos, module markings, and any approved technical information.
Any advice on what to request from the manufacturer first would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
