Nemo could use layer-shell for desktop icons

It would be nice if Nemo gained support for applying layer-shell to the desktop window, this will allow it to work in many wayland compositors such as Wayfire, LabWC and Plasma. I am open to implementing it if approved.

Take a look at the commit history for Nemo. Someone had implemented this previously but it had to be rolled back since it caused issues. If you are going to take a turn at implementing it, make sure to avoid the same pitfalls as a minimum first. I think a pull request that doesn't introduce regressions would be accepted if not welcome but that is my opinion.

Can I make it only use layer-shell when Cinnamon is not running?

You can try? That would be based on the environment variable but considering that Cinnamon isn't the only X11-based desktop where Nemo is used, it would probably be better to detect if the protocol is supported in the current session before enabling the protocol rather than tying it to a specific desktop environment.
