Description of the hardware

Rog Strix x870-e Plus wifi mobo, AMD 7800x3d cpu, Kingston Beast 32 Gb DDR5 RAM (2 x 16), ASrock RX9070XT GPU, Samsung 990 pro 2 Tbyte nvme, Dual boot Win 11 pro and Mint 22.3. S/Pdif does not work. lspci shows only amd as audio, no realtek. Tried downloading and compiling realtek driver from the Realtek web site but it fails, even with sudo. Strangely I upgraded from a TUF Gaming X870-e plus wifi7, and it worked fine. Linux detected and automatically installed the appropriate driver on that board, seems like the same audio chip.

Hello! That is an impressive build. The issue you're having is likely because the X870-E chipset is much newer than the default kernel in older Mint versions. # I see you are in an old version of linux which is based on ubuntu from 2020 which is not supported for some parts but you can try the following:

1. Check your Kernel version:
   Please post the output of uname -r. For hardware this new (Ryzen 7000 and X870), you really need at least Kernel 6.8 or 6.11+ for full support.

2. The S/PDIF "USB" Quirk:
   Many new ASUS boards (like your Strix) don't use the traditional High Definition Audio bus for Realtek anymore. They actually connect the audio chip via an internal USB bus. This is why lspci doesn't show it.

   Try running lsusb and see if a Realtek device shows up there.

3. Don't compile the Realtek Website driver:
   Linux drivers are built into the Kernel. Downloading the .exe-style driver from Realtek's site usually fails on modern kernels. I recommend:

   Open Update Manager.

   Go to View > Linux Kernels.

   Install the latest HWE (Hardware Enablement) kernel available (e.g., 6.8 or newer).

4. Check PipeWire:
   Since you are on a newer Mint, you are using PipeWire. Install pavucontrol (sudo apt install pavucontrol), open it, go to the Configuration tab, and see if "Digital Stereo (S/PDIF) Output" is listed in the profile dropdown.

Thanks for the reply. Did a suggested. Still on audio. Spdif always showed as output, Still does. But no sound. I go into the settings on the avr, which defaults to auto, force to digital (this works un windows 11), but not on mint 223 even with the 6.80 kernel. Lsusb does not show any realtek devices.
