An Application Programming Interface (API) is a way for different computer programs to talk to each other. An API Key is the key that unlocks the door for that conversation to happen. It's a long string of letters and numbers that you include with your requests to an API.

In simple terms: An API key is like a key to a hotel room. It proves you have permission to be there, and the hotel can track which key was used to access which room. You wouldn't share your room key with a stranger, and you should treat your API key with the same level of security.

Principle 1: Identification

The primary purpose of an API key is to identify the client (the application or user making the request). Each key is unique, so the API provider can log which user is making which requests.

While an API key itself is more for identification, it is the first step in the authorization process. The API server checks the key to see what level of access it has. For example, a free-tier user might have access to fewer features than a paid user.

Principle 3: Secrecy

An API key is a secret and must be treated like a password. If someone else gets your API key, they can make requests on your behalf, which could result in your account being charged for their usage or being banned for malicious activity.
