We've been using this PR for some time with a self-built image, just wanted to say it works great, so it would be nice to have it merged here.

Please @SuperQ @rustycl0ck take a look at the PR. The code changes have been working stable for us for months now, and it would be great not to have to maintain our own fork (self-built image) anymore.
