Update — April 2026: Quarto Wizard is now at v2.3.1 and has matured well beyond the initial release.
Here are the highlights since this thread was first posted.

What's new

• Works without the Quarto CLI. Install, update, and remove extensions entirely from within VS Code or Positron, even on machines where Quarto is not installed. Corporate proxies are supported out of the box.
• Smart authoring help. Autocomplete, validation, and hover previews for extension YAML, shortcodes, and inline attributes, so you spend less time checking the docs.
• Insert extension snippets in a click. Browse the snippets provided by your installed extensions from the Explorer view, with inline previews before you insert.
• See compatibility at a glance. The installed-extensions view shows the Quarto version each extension needs and whether it is up to date.

More ways to install

• Install directly from GitHub, pinned to a tag, branch, or commit, e.g., owner/repo@v2.
• Pick the source up front when installing an extension or using a template, from the Registry, GitHub, a URL, or a local folder.
• Install brands with quarto use brand from the registry, GitHub, a URL, or local files.
• Pick which extensions to install when a source bundles several of them.

Templates

• Choose the files you want. A tree view lets you tick exactly which template files to copy in.
• Drop templates into a subfolder instead of always the project root.

Private repositories

• Sign in with your VS Code or Positron GitHub session to install extensions and templates from your private repositories.
• Friendly prompts when something is locked. If a repository is private or gated behind SSO, Quarto Wizard offers a one-click sign-in or authorisation action instead of failing silently.
