Free outlook account SmtpClientAuthentication is disabled for the Mailbox outlook erroo

Hello,

I have created a free outlook account to test oauth2-proxy. Authentication is done correct but I am getting the below error when I try to send an email:
535 5.7.139 Authentication unsuccessful, SmtpClientAuthentication is disabled for the Mailbox. Visit https://aka.ms/smtp_auth_disabled for more information

Below is the configuraiton:

I found error is also present in Thunderbird:

That's interesting – I wasn't aware of this. I suppose it was inevitable that Microsoft would start applying the M365 SMTP restrictions to their free version, too.

There's no way around this, so your only option is to either use another service, or switch to a provider that uses Microsoft Graph instead of raw IMAP/POP/SMTP. I know Auth-Email offers this; there may also be others.

so I tried to add Mail.ReadWrite and Mail.Send oauth2 scopes in the accounts definition,
but no luck same error

Just to understand what is Outlook doing different ?

Those are the Microsoft Graph scopes. Graph is fundamentally different to IMAP/POP/SMTP, and they will not work with the proxy.
