Clarification on building/installing/making SOfa and SofaGym works

Hi all,

I would really like to start working with Sofa for research purposes, but I find extremely confusing how to start.
In particular I couldn't understand:

• which os between Windows and Linux is the recommended one,
• which version of Sofa download and install,
• which is the best way (binaries or from source),
• which version of Python to use --> SofaPython3 suggest Python 3.12, while if I want to try using SofaGym it requires Python3.10 max since its dependencies (gym==0.21.0, stable-baselines3[extra]==1.7.0) require an older version.
• Where, if exists, can I find a compatibility guide for versions, plugins and packages/requirements (i.e. Franka compatibility table.

I'd like to know even if is possible to have multiple Sofa versions in one machine, if I should download them inside different virtual environments and how to do that, since (I tried in Windows based pc) we need to set environments variables that are global for the account.

• Linux or Windows is up to you, where you are the most comfortable
• the more recent SOFA versions the better
• binaries or source : if you want to access and edit the code, best is source
• SofaGym is unfortunately in a dormancy phase therefore, it does not follow SOFA and its dependencies. But if you have python3.10 both SOFA (for sure) and SofaGym should work
• version guide is available for each releases on GitHub : https://github.com/sofa-framework/sofa/releases/
• multiple SOFA : why not, but then you need to be careful in your paths (SOFA_ROOT, PYTHONPATH etc)
