A number is printed every time Sphinx runs into a subfigure in the build process. This appears as verbose, and can be confusing without further context.

Read the Docs has deprecated the use of Sphinx projects without an
explicit path to the configuration file. This adds the path to
`.readthedocs.yaml`.

Read more about this at https://about.readthedocs.com/blog/2024/12/deprecate-config-files-without-sphinx-or-mkdocs-config/.

Would be great to see this merged and released; the numbers printed during build are really annoying :)

Ping @chrisjsewell would be great to get this one merged and released to remove the annoying debug output.

@ffplexim @chrisjsewell might need an additional maintainer. I know very little of sphinx internals, so cannot volunterr. Perhaps moving to sphinx-contrib would help?

Thanks @andersfagerli for the fix! 🙏 The repository had drifted a long way since this was opened (CI/tooling overhaul in #21, bug fixes in #23), so this branch no longer merged cleanly — your change has instead landed via #28, with credit to you as Co-authored-by on the commit. The debug output is gone from main and will be in the next release (v0.3.0). Closing as superseded by #28.
