Example of combining SumatraPDF RUN with other resources

The new RUN function is easy to use but perhaps hard to show what is possible so here are some smaller examples from the command line > you can use many windows function via a single CMD so in a folder with SumatraPDF.exe (use a renamed portable copy).

NOTE the deliberate misuse of the file extension (badly renaming a PNG to a JPG) since MuTool in SumatraPDF as with many PDF Applications will resolve the file type discrepancy itself. CURL is a downloader and -LO retains the source name whilst -lo will allow to change the filename

The power of using RUN is not well documented by Artifex so here is a taster of how to use with annotations since a common request is how to export either the text under a highlighted area or export the comments so first here is a n example of how to extract text from under highlights. using a copy of out.pdf (the above first file) we can highlight the Hello World (without comment) by press A and save as out-hl.pdf

so again using CURL pull down the HL2Text script

then we can RUN

Which will show the options (note replace mutool with "Path to\SumatraPDF.exe")

Usage: mutool run HL2Text.js [-f=N] [-l=N] [-o|-o=filename.txt] [-s] file.pdf

You should read what each one does by open the js file in notepad, but as an example with above file to see result on console

The console response will show (use the -o option if you want to save to a file)

Contrary to user expectation Highlights ARE NOT attached to text they float above it thus this highlight is exactly the same and thus produce the same result.

Also that smaller example (there is a bigger one) only works with Highlight, Squiggly & Underline (there is an error with StrikeOut, see if you can guess why) It was not extended to squares or circles but the bigger script can.

The error is the detection should have been "/StrikeOut" not Strikethrough and thus if you change that you could also add /Square and Circle in the same way

And of course we can return the results back to SumatraPDF via -new-window (you may need to change the file naming to make that easier in a workflow of your own.

So far although we wrote a PDF we have not edited one and this is where the power of RUN becomes more noticable as we can add highlights by specify colour or text or comments to be attached to the highlight.
