[bug] when enable xp style in address bar, the software will crash and can not be reopened. I have tried to edit config and change addons.xml - XP = '0' , and still can not reopen TE.
OS: win11
TE portable version
I reopen my pc and restart TE, it can be started but lose all the opened tabs, how can i find them back?

The tabs are saved in window1.xml file in the config folder. If you can't see them in TE, you probably cannot get them back.

As far as I know, enabling XP style will NOT cause TE to crash. The crash may be due do something else.

@testhuohuyx, I just wanted to suggest, if you don’t already have it enabled, that you consider turning on the backup option.

This option was introduced in the program specifically for situations like this.

That would be a solution in case a similar situation happens again, as a backup (*.bak) would be created and the existing settings would be preserved.

Tools → Options → General → Backup Up Files (*.bak) → "Leave in Existing Location".

In case something happens, close the TE, delete the extension *.bak - you can rename the existing one (**window1.xml.old**), and then start it again TE

Before:

• window1.xml [X] → add .old
• window1.xml.bak [✓]→remove .bak

After:

• window1.xml.old [X]
• window1.xml [✓]

Could you tell us a bit more about your configuration, are you using WebView2 or not? (tewv32.dll/tewv64.dll)

If possible, please check this under the About section.

Or, please try doing the same yourself and let us know whether the issue also occurs on your side without tewv32.dll/tewv64.dll.

In other words, does the TE stop working (crash) when you perform that action without it, or does it happen only when you’re working with tewv32.dll/tewv64.dll?

How can it be temporarily disable WebView2?

Close the TE program.
The (.dll) files are located inside the “lib” folder.

Start the TE program again and check the status afterward.

Of course, the backup solution will not resolve the underlying reason why the program stops working, but it can serve as an additional "safety mechanism" that helps preserve the previously working state.

That’s why more detailed information about your configuration is very helpful, as it allows for a more accurate diagnosis and helps identify and eliminate the root cause of the issue, ensuring the system always operates as reliably as possible - in this and any other scenario/cases.

All of this together affects the overall stability of the program and how it behaves in your environment.

I have tested this on my side as well, but I cannot reproduce the issue - although I am using Windows 10.

I tested with both versions:
• Trident/IE11 (te64.dll)
• WebView2 (tewv64.dll)

WebView2 and Trident (IE11) are two different rendering engines that TE can use.

By default, if both engines are present, WebView2 will be used, since it is newer - more modern, and currently still under active development.

If you want to 'temporarily disable' WebView2 , you can simply delete or rename the corresponding *.dll file(s).
(tewv32.dll/tewv64.dll)

In that case, TE will automatically switch to Trident/IE11
(te32.dll/te64.dll)

I tried it at the beginning and saw that if only tewv32.dll/tewv64.dll are present without te32.dll/te64.dll, TE won't work.

I concluded that *.te32/64.dll are essentially the main components.

I'm curious about one thing: if Microsoft were to completely remove components based on Trident/IE11 technology from their system (since it's currently integrated into the Windows OS), would te32.dll and te64.dll still be usable without issues if tewv32.dll/tewv64.dll are not present?

As far as I know, Microsoft has 'discontinued development' of the Trident engine, and support exists until 2029, by which time applications using such components should switch to WebView2.

I'm interested in the next version, Windows 12, and whether it will support components that use Trident/IE11 technology.

The development of the Trident (MSHTML) engine has long been discontinued (Microsoft has switched to Chromium-based Edge).

As for Trident/MSHTML components (used in old applications, WebOC controls, Access forms, legacy intranet pages, etc.), they still have support until 2029.

Microsoft has not removed the Trident engine from Windows yet because it is deeply integrated into the operating system (used for IE Mode in Edge, various system components, old applications, etc.).

So, my question is hypothetical, as it seems that Trident/IE11 will remain a part of the OS, precisely due to compatibility.

It's highly likely that support for Trident/IE11 components will continue at least until 2029 (Microsoft has been consistent with this on Windows 11).

Just like the continued support for IE Mode in Microsoft Edge (which uses Trident) will continue to be supported until 2029, with a one-year notice before eventual shutdown.

Similarly, components like WebOC (WebBrowser control), MSHTA, and similar legacy things that depend on MSHTML/Trident will likely continue to work, as Microsoft explicitly states that they are supported until 2029 (e.g., in the context of Microsoft Access applications and similar).

I understand that Microsoft is slowly pushing for migration to WebView2 (a modern Chromium-based control), but they won't abruptly cut off support for existing Trident -based things until they give enough time for transition.

Windows 12 (whenever it comes out) will most likely integrate and support these legacy Trident/IE11 components at least until 2029, in the same way as Windows 11.

I hope they won't remove them, as that would break the functionality of too many enterprise and legacy applications.
