Problems with fontawesome5

Hello all,
I think there is a problem with fontawesome5. When I compile the LaTeX code below, no PDF is generated. But if I change fontawesome5 to fontawesome, a correct PDF is generated. How do I use fontawesome5 correctly?

I can reproduce this with an even smaller example on macOS.

Minimal reproducer

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{fontawesome5}

\begin{document}

\end{document}

Actual result

Expected result

Tectonic should either compile the document or report a normal LaTeX/font error. It should not abort with a malloc/free error.

Environment

• Tectonic: 0.16.9
• CLI: tectonic -X compile
• Bundle: built-in default bundle
• macOS: 26.4
• Architecture: Quad-Core Intel Core i5

No local TeX Live or MacTeX installation is present. This reproduces with Tectonic's built-in default bundle.

I've run into this issue today on Linux. The useful symptom is that this doesn't work on tectonic specifically. Trying to compile the same document with fontawesome5 didn't break xelatex quite in the same way.
