I'd like to get the changes in before we diverge further and in order to add a more thorough lint target using pylint and ruff on top of black and isort.

This is not to hijack it but I'd really like to get the changes in before we diverge further and in order to add a more thorough lint target using pylint and ruff on top of black and isort.
