ここでは "shape" を「形状」と訳していますが、ここで何が説明されているかを考えると、「形態」や「状態」といった単語のほうがしっくりくるなあと思いました。少し一般的ではない訳にはなってしまうかなあという感じですが、一応 "shape" が「状態」というような意味で使われることもあるようなので大きく外してはいないのかなあと思います。どうでしょうか。

全く同じように悩んで「形態」にしようか悩んだんですけど、「誰か指摘したら変えよう」と思ってそのままにしてました。
「形態」にします。
