If you wanted to edit the existing page, you might use Open Sans and the Sandstone gradient background. I think adding a search (or moving the Twitter or RSS feed) call-to-action front and center is nice to encourage engagement. We could even add a subtitle under "A Better Web Starts Here" that reads something like "We're pulling together resources on web compatibility. Help us build a better web by reading and contributing to the community."
Here are some super loose ideas for the next pass. I'm interested to hear some user perspectives on how, when and where they will use the site. I'd love to incorporate a sign up or contribute call to action. If possible, we can make the categories of "Articles" "Tools" "Standards", etc. more visual. Or we could load the latest in each category on the homepage for better dynamic content.
This first idea I did in mobile and the second I did web, but we would obviously design/build responsively as Mike has already done.
